Program Overview

The National Capital Consortium's Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is the only gynecologic oncology fellowship training program in the Department of Defense. It is a tri-service fellowship and the application process is open to any qualified active duty military member. Our goal is to produce physician scientists fluent in the latest advances in molecular biology and translational science with specialized clinical skills including advanced abdominopelvic surgery, chemotherapy administration, and critical care medicine. Our fellows graduate prepared to serve as faculty in military treatment facilities where they maintain the high standards of gynecologic oncology training for OB/GYN residents and provide expert consultative service in oncology and other complex pelvic pathology.

The fellowship is structured as two years of basic and translational research and two years of clinical training. Research is conducted at two prestigious laboratories – the Women's Health Integrated Research Center located in Annandale, Virginia and the National Cancer Institute, across the street from Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD. Fellows rotate through three facilities for their clinical experiences: Walter Reed Bethesda, Washington Hospital Center, and Inova Fairfax Hospital. Here, fellows will learn state-of-the art surgical procedures and therapies.

All fellows actively participate in cooperative clinical trials through the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and the National Cancer Institute, as well as industry-sponsored studies, where they gain an understanding of the clinical trial process.

Upon completion of their training, fellows typically spend several years in military institutions and frequently remain in the uniformed services until retirement. By virtue of their advanced training, graduates of the program make it possible for military members and their dependents to have access to cutting edge evaluations and treatments for gynecologic malignancies as well as pre-invasive diseases of the genital tract. When called upon, our graduates routinely deploy as general surgeons and during these times, oncologic surgical training is translated into far forward expertise in abdominopelvic trauma.
