Comprehensive Dentistry in the Navy

NPDS_smLogo60

The comprehensive dentistry community consists of Dental Corps officers who have completed a two-year postdoctoral training program in general dentistry.
A comprehensive dentist is a highly trained general dentist with the knowledge and experience necessary to serve in smaller and remote clinics independent of direct specialty support.

Comprehensive dentists have the ability to perform more advanced clinical procedures that bridge the gap between general dentistry and specialty services, and have an increased understanding of various advanced treatment options.

As leaders in dental education for the Dental Corps, comprehensive dentists have the knowledge and skills to mentor junior general dentists in the full scope of general dentistry, both through informal mentorship and by acting as faculty members and program directors for the Navy’s 1-year AEGD and GPR programs, and the flagship 2-year comprehensive dentistry residency at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD. The wide scope of knowledge and outstanding communication skills necessary to be a successful comprehensive dentist also prepare many in the community to excel as leaders in Navy Medicine.

The Specialty Leader for Comprehensive Dentistry is CDR Jayson Huber. E-Mail CDR Huber at: jayson.huber@cvn79.navy.mil

Comprehensive Dentistry Residency Program

Advanced training in general dentistry consists of 2 years of formal study in an integrated program which is fully accredited by the ADA’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) as an AEGD-2 program. The graduate will receive a residency certificate upon graduation, along with a Masters in Oral Biology degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Additionally, the 2 years of training fulfill the requirements to challenge the American Board of General Dentistry’s board certification exam. Board-certified specialists from each department at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School augment the Comprehensive Dentistry staff in order to maximize residents’ exposure to different ideas and techniques.

Year One

The first year unites basic and dental sciences in a formal schedule. Courses in the biological sciences are designed to update the dental officer’s knowledge in these areas, and the resident is then expected to correlate the subject matter with clinical practice. The resident is also required to engage in a research project.

Year Two

Year 2 is a continuation of the didactic and clinical experiences from Year 1. The didactic portion of the second year consists of literature reviews and seminars in various dental disciplines. The second-year curriculum expands the clinical experience to 70 percent of contact hours. Upon completion of the program, residents are expected to have improved skills in operative dentistry, digital dentistry, implantology, fixed and removable prosthodontics, periodontal and oral surgery, pedodontics, orthodontics and orofacial pain management.
