Orthopedic Adult Joint Reconstruction Care Center of Excellence
The Orthopedic Adult Joint Reconstruction Care Center of Excellence is located in the National Capital Region. We share services with A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center. We focus on adult joint reconstruction procedures (hip and knee total joint replacement). The CoE’s focus on high-value surgical procedures supports readiness and demonstrates strong patient outcomes.
Who We Serve
Our goal is to be the primary treatment option for all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries—service members, retirees, and family members—and veterans within the National Capital Region. Referrals may also be accepted from other geographic locations for complex total joint reconstruction cases. Active duty service members may be eligible to get their travel expenses covered if their referrals are from outside of the National Capital Region.

Getting a Referral
You may contact the CoE with referral inquiries.
MTF providers may initiate a referral for virtual consultation at the CoE using MHS GENESIS Referral Management 2.0.
Managed care support contractors will work with TRICARE Health Plan and the DHA Integrated Referral Management and Appointing Center to assess beneficiaries’ eligibility to receive care at this CoE based on target clinical referral criteria.
Travel and Lodging
If you’re referred to the Orthopedic Care COE from outside of our catchment area (40 miles), you or your family may need to stay in the area for an extended number of days. Active Duty Service Members
• You may be able to get travel funding through your unit.
• Your referrals must be coordinated with your primary care manager and/or local referring MTF’s orthopedics department.
• Your command must approve your travel.
All Others
• Your travel and lodging expenses may not be fully covered.
• Please refer to DHA Procedural Instruction 7000.100 for details about patent travel.
Instructions for VA Patients
Department of Veterans Affairs’ beneficiaries in the National Capitol Region may qualify for total joint reconstruction care at the COE via patient sharing agreements. Interested patients should contact their primary care manager and local Veterans Benefits Administration office.
