Orthopedic Surgery

We provide expert orthopedic care for active duty service members, retirees, and their family members. We are committed to optimizing and maintaining a medically ready force, and setting the standard for orthopedic care in military medicine through patient care, education and research. Sub-specialty areas include:

Foot & Ankle
Your feet are very complex and prone to a number of injuries. Our fellowship-trained physicians are committed to excellence in treating foot and ankle injuries. We are skilled in the latest techniques to get you back on your feet. Areas of expertise include Achilles tendon rupture and tendonitis, ankle sprains and fractures, ankle and foot arthritis, ankle instability, bunions and toe deformities, cartilage defects, flat feet and plantar fasciitis.

Hand
Your hands play an important role in work, play and daily activities. Our hand service offers treatments for a variety of hand, wrist, and upper extremity conditions. Walter Reed Bethesda is proudly home to the military’s orthopedic hand fellowship training program, which exemplifies our commitment to education and research. Areas of expertise include carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytrens contractures, finger, wrist, upper extremity fractures, ganglion cysts, trigger finger and hand, wrist and elbow arthritis.

Joint Replacement
Degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis frequently affects the knees and hips, and can account for significant disability among patients. Our fellowship-trained physicians are committed to rapidly restoring function and pain relief through the most current joint replacement surgery techniques. Areas of expertise include direct anterior hip replacement, minimally invasive posterior hip replacement, partial knee replacement, and total knee replacement.

Oncology
As part of a multidisciplinary team, we work with the John P. Murtha Cancer Center, to provide safe, high quality, compassionate care. Our faculty members are leaders in research and innovation, and have been nationally recognized for their excellence. Areas of expertise include advanced amputation surgery (including osseointegration and targeted muscle reinnervation), benign tumors of bone and soft tissue, Ewings sarcoma, heterotopic ossification, metastatic bone disease (from any cancer), osteosarcoma, and soft tissue sarcoma.

Pediatrics
Our pediatric orthopedic specialists provide the highest quality care to children and their families. Walter Reed Bethesda represents the largest provider of pediatric orthopedic care in the National Capital Region. Areas of expertise include broken bones, clubfoot and other foot disorders, hip dysplasia, limb deformities, limb-length discrepancy, neuromuscular conditions, scoliosis, slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), sports injuries and syndromic conditions.

Podiatry

Spine
The majority of Americans will experience some form of low back pain in their lifetime. Back pain often results in limited activity and represents a significant cause of disability. Our spine specialists are trained to investigate the cause(s) of your pain and are committed to improving your quality of life. We offer minimally invasive procedures and the latest advances in spine surgery. Areas of expertise include cervical disc herniation, cervical spondylosis, degenerative disc disease, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, sciatica and scoliosis.

Sports
Whether you are a weekend warrior or competitive athlete, our team of specialists are committed to providing the highest quality care. Alongside physical and occupational therapists, our physicians apply a multidisciplinary approach to maximize improvement and prevent further injury. We utilize the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques to get you back in the game. Areas of expertise include knees: ligament injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL), meniscal tears, cartilage injuries, patellar tendonitis and patellar dislocation; hips: femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears and hamstring injuries; and shoulders: arthritis, rotator cuff tears, instability, labral tears, biceps tendonitis and biceps tendon rupture.

Trauma
Whether you have sustained a simple or complex fracture, our trauma specialists are here to provide exceptional care for all injuries. We are committed to restoring function as quickly and as fully as possible. Areas of expertise include pelvic, acetabular and extremity fractures; limb salvage; limb deformity and lengthening; non-union and malunion; and amputation/amputee care.
