Neurosurgery

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Neurosurgery remains the military’s leader in the care of servicemen and women who have suffered traumatic brain and spinal column injury during war. Since 2003, our neurosurgery staff has cared for greater than 95% of all severe central nervous system injuries from Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and are the recognized world leaders in the surgical and critical care management of penetrating brain injury.

Though providing world class neurotrauma and critical care remains our primary mission, WRNMMC neurosurgery provides subspecialty and fellowship trained expertise in all areas of neurosurgery. We serve all active duty, dependent, and retiree personnel, and accept referrals from all over the world.

Our Mission

We train neurologic surgeons who are research oriented and will be leaders in military neurosurgery. It is our general philosophy to provide numerous clinical and research opportunities for each resident. Toward that goal, we have established relationships with several medical and research organizations within our system and the National Capital Area. It is our belief that by providing the neurosurgical resident a myriad of clinical and research opportunities, the young physician will excel in becoming a well-rounded neurological surgeon. Through close mentoring we aim to provide strong role models that the neurosurgery resident can emulate.

The Leaders in Military Neurosurgery

The National Capital Consortium offers a training program in neurological surgery under the auspices of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The program, located in the metropolitan area of Bethesda, M.D., is the only residency in neurological surgery available in the uniformed military services of the United States. The seven year program is accredited by the Residency Review Committee for Neurological Surgery of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
