Hematology and Medical Oncology Clinic

John P. Murtha Cancer Center LogoWelcome to the Hematology and Medical Oncology Clinic of the John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The Murtha Cancer Center is accredited by the Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program of the Commission on Cancer and is the only Cancer Center of Excellence in the Military Health System.

Our mission is to serve you with the same dedication you have shown our nation. We provide world-class, patient-centered hematology and oncology care tailored to the unique needs of service members, their families, and eligible veterans.

Our multi-disciplinary team offers comprehensive cancer and hematologic treatment that provides access to cutting-edge therapies and expanded opportunities for clinical trials. Our team works directly with our surgical teams, radiation oncologists, nurse case managers, nutritionists, and social workers to provide exceptional care to active duty service members and their dependents. We collaborate with regional institutions like the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, and Georgetown University to ensure you receive the most advanced care available.

Our team aspires to navigate the journey ahead with you because we understand the unique challenges military members face — and the challenges that a cancer or blood disorder diagnosis brings. So, if you’re a Department of War Tricare beneficiary who was diagnosed with or suspected of having a blood disorder or cancer, please contact our clinic for an evaluation.

We're part of a multidisciplinary care team that holds weekly tumor board discussions for gastrointestinal, thoracic, head and neck, cutaneous hematologic, breast, and genitourinary cancers.

From initial diagnosis to the most advanced treatments, our capabilities are designed to provide world-class care for our nation's heroes and their families.

Our Cellular Therapy and Transplant Services

The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) accredits our bone marrow and stem cell transplant program. That signifies our commitment to the highest standards of quality in patient care and laboratory practices. We provide leading-edge cellular therapies that specialize in autologous stem cell transplantation for conditions such as multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and germ cell tumors.

As part of our commitment to providing the most advanced cancer treatments, we are excited to add Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy to our services in fall 2026. We are the only center within Department of War to offer this groundbreaking therapy.

We proudly serve as the designated cellular therapy referral center for our partners at the Washington VA Medical Center, Baltimore VAMC and Martinsburg VAMC, in West Virginia, to expand access to this critical care. Additionally, our expert team evaluates all Tricare beneficiaries to determine their eligibility for these life-saving therapies.
