Preventive Medicine
Preventive Medicine promotes and protects the health of the military community through evidence-based disease prevention, direct patient care, health promotion, and specialized travel and epidemiology services. We serve active duty service members, their family members, military retirees, federal civilian employees and other National Capital Region beneficiaries.
Programs and Services
Epidemiology and Disease Control
- Communicable disease education, prevention, surveillance, investigation, control, reporting, and epidemiology
- Sexual health services, including:
- Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic
- Walk-in STI Clinic: Monday–Friday, 8–11 a.m.
- HIV program management and counseling
- Counseling on responsible sexual behavior and sexual health
- Condom provision and sexual health resources
- Sexual Health Resources
Tuberculosis (TB) Program and Surveillance
- TB screening and Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) Clinic
Health Promotion and Wellness
- Planning and coordination of health fairs, health observances, and community health education initiatives
Child and Youth Program Consultation
- Preventive health consultation and support for Child and Youth Programs
Animal Bite and Rabies Control
- Evaluation and coordination of care following animal bites and potential rabies exposure
Blood Lookback Program (non-FDA)
- Notification, counseling, and screening of recipients of emergency or non-FDA-approved blood products for transfusion-transmitted infections.
Graduate Medical Education Support
- Preventive medicine and population health expertise in support of GME programs/training
Travel Medicine Service (Pre-travel Health Consultation)
In-person and Virtual
- Comprehensive pre-travel healthcare consultations for international travel, including permanent change of station (PCS), duty travel, humanitarian missions, and leisure trips
- Secure telehealth appointments ( 30–45 minutes) conducted from your home or office
- Individualized risk assessment and destination-specific recommendations, including guidance on regionally relevant vaccines, vector-borne disease prevention, water and food born disease mitigation, high-altitude illness prevention, and strategies to reduce the risk of other travel-related illnesses
- Prescriptions and vaccine orders transmitted to the beneficiary’s closest Military Treatment Facility for administration and pickup
Patient Guidance
Appointment Timing
Schedule travel medicine visits 3–4 weeks before departure to allow sufficient time for vaccine-induced immunity.
Immunization Records
Have physical immunization records available during virtual visits, particularly for civilian dependents and retirees who may not have complete electronic documentation.
Travel Safety Enrollment
Enrollment in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is recommended for international security updates and assistance.
