Meet Our Surgeon

Capt. Michael Cirivello, MD, FAANS
U.S. Navy
Chief, Walter Reed Neurological Surgery

What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?

My journey in medicine began as an enlisted Navy Hospital Corpsman, where I witnessed firsthand the impact that compassionate and skilled medical care could have on service members and their families. Working alongside military physicians in challenging environments inspired me to pursue medicine as a lifelong calling. The opportunity to attend the Uniformed Services University allowed me to continue serving while deepening my knowledge and skills — transforming my early experiences on the front lines of care into a career dedicated to advancing military medicine.

What is your area of expertise, and what do you enjoy most about your work?

My area of expertise is neurosurgery, with a focus on treating complex conditions of the brain and spine. As Chief of Neurosurgery and Program Director for the military’s only neurosurgery residency, I take great pride in developing the next generation of military neurosurgeons. What I enjoy most is the combination of precision and purpose — every operation, every trainee, and every patient encounter contributes to a larger mission of preserving and restoring the health and readiness of our military community.

How do you ensure a positive patient experience in your care?

I believe a positive patient experience begins with listening. Many neurosurgical conditions are life-changing, and patients often arrive anxious or uncertain. Taking time to explain diagnoses, review imaging together, and discuss all treatment options — both surgical and non-surgical — builds trust and confidence. I also work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure every patient receives compassionate, coordinated care from diagnosis through recovery. My goal is for every patient to leave knowing they were treated with the same respect and dedication I would offer to a family member or fellow service member.

Can you share a memorable moment or success story from your practice?

One of the most memorable moments of my career was caring for a service member who sustained a severe traumatic brain injury during deployment from an improvised explosive device. He was young and his family was devastated. Through a combination of surgical intervention, intensive rehabilitation, and the patient’s extraordinary determination, he regained the ability to communicate, walk, and ultimately returned to active duty. Experiences like that remind me why we do what we do — they reflect not just the science of neurosurgery, but the resilience and spirit of those we serve.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of medicine, I find balance and perspective through family, cycling, sailing, and travel. I enjoy spending time with my family, whether at home or exploring new places together. Long-distance cycling offers both physical challenge and mental clarity — many of my best ideas come on a quiet stretch of road. Sailing combines teamwork and navigation in a way that feels both grounding and liberating. These pursuits, much like neurosurgery, demand focus, discipline, and a deep appreciation for life’s journey.
