Breast Imaging Center

The Breast Imaging Center (BIC) provides same day imaging service to Breast Care Center patients when needed. We use advanced technology and today's latest equipment in patient care.

Women who need to undergo a breast examination may visit the Breast Care Center first, in case a lump is felt in the breast. Doctors there will give the patient a consultation form for evaluation at BIC for additional imaging. If there is a problem, the patient is notified that same day. For routine mammogram screenings, results are usually mailed to the patient within two weeks.

We have the only Breast Imaging Center in the National Capital Area that is co-located with a Breast Care Center. Furthermore, the Breast Care medical team visits outlying clinics like Quantico and Patuxent River Naval Air Station, to update health care providers on breast and mammogram issues. The trips make it easier for the clinics' patients with breast concerns to get seen by breast surgeons and undergo mammograms in the same visit to WRNMMC, increasing both patient satisfaction and convenience.

Nuclear Medicine

Often the key to early detection, diagnosis, and treatment

Nuclear medicine helps to diagnose and treat disease by imaging organs and structures in the body. It is a safe, painless method to gain vital information, often in early disease state, that might otherwise be missed or require more extensive and costly procedures. Nearly all of the major organ systems may be imaged safely with nuclear medicine.

Radioactive materials or radiopharmaceuticals are introduced that are attracted to specific organs, bones, or tissues. This material then can be detected externally by special cameras - gamma or PET cameras.

Radiology Archives Office

The Radiology Archives Office processes official requests to release radiology imaging records for imaging completed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and some of its outlying clinics. 

To request radiology imaging records for a specific patient, please submit a completed Radiology Imaging Request Form, and a clear color copy of the front and back of the patient's valid Government-issued ID (i.e. DoD ID, VA ID, State Issued ID, or Passport) via email at: dha.bethesda.wrnmmc.mbx.fileroom-radiology@health.mil.
Please note: The name and date of birth on the ID must match our records, otherwise, you will have to provide legal documentation that validates the discrepancy. 

If you are requesting radiology imaging for someone other than yourself, you must submit a Written Consent Form completed by the patient and/or Legal Documentation that allows the release of information at the same time you submit the Radiology Imaging Request Form. The requestor must also provide a clear color copy of the front and back of his or her valid Government-issued ID card (i.e. DoD ID, VA ID, State Issued ID, or Passport).
Please note: Digital signatures are only accepted for staff members of WRNMMC. All others must print and sign your document(s) in the designated signature area.

Please be aware that an incomplete form or missing documents may cause processing delays or the inability to process your request entirely.

Some radiology reports may also be accessed through the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal or by contacting the Medical Records Office at the nearest Military Treatment Facility (MTF).

Copying a DoD ID Card is authorized for Health Care purposes, and when being used to perform official government business (DoD instruction 1000.13)

Current authorized DoD and VA ID cards should contain a ten (10) digit identification number that is unique to the individual. This ten (10) digit number is the same number used for both the DoD and VA systems, however this number may be referred to by different names.

Starting May 7, 2025, all people submitting a State Issued ID Card for identification must present with a REAL ID Card as defined by the REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005. Learn more information about the REAL ID Card.

Note: Expired ID cards are not valid, and will not be accepted as proof of identity.

3-D Medical Applications Center (3-D MAC)

The 3-D Medical Applications Center (3-D MAC) is an Additive Manufacturing Facility located within the Department of Radiology at WRNMMC.
The mission of the 3-D Medical Applications Center is to provide:

• Digital support and fabrication of medical models, custom implants, surgical guides, and custom devices
• Technical support for virtual treatment planning
• Image capture/3-D scanning for patient treatment
• Input as an active participant in graduate medical/dental education and research
