November Brings Awareness to Stomach Cancer, Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — In 2010, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution designating November as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is the fourth most common cancer type and the second leading cause of cancer death in the world. More than 21,000 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer this year, and nearly half of those diagnosed will lose their battle with the disease.

COPD Affects Approximately 16 Million Americans, Making Breathing Difficult
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — What is COPD? “Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term used to describe chronic lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and is characterized by breathlessness. Some people with COPD also experience tiredness and chronic cough with or without mucus,” said Army Maj. (Dr.) Nikhil Huprikar, chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Service at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). “COPD makes breathing difficult for the 16 million Americans who have this disease. Millions more people suffer from COPD but have not been diagnosed and are not being treated. Although there is no cure for COPD, it can be treated,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To draw greater attention to COPD and educate the public about the disease, November is annually observed as National COPD Awareness Month.
