Doctor Stresses Screening for Colorectal Cancer

WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Dr.) Mary O’Donnell, chief of the Colon and Rectal Surgery for the National Capital Region and Cancer Liaison Physician at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, says that screening for the disease, especially if the cancer is caught early, has been shown to save lives.

For the past decade, the Archbishop for the Military Services, Timothy Broglio, has led the Ash Wednesday Mass at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and he continued that tradition this year, leading the liturgy on Feb. 22 in Memorial Auditorium.

Archbishop for Military Services Gives Ash Wednesday Mass at Walter Reed

WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — For the past decade, the Archbishop for the Military Services has led the Ash Wednesday Mass at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and he continued that tradition this year, leading the liturgy on Feb. 22 in Memorial Auditorium.

Dr. Jonathan Woodson, President of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) sat down with Navy Capt. Kelly Elmore, Chief of Staff, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) for a conversation in front of a live audience at the hospital on Feb. 21 2023 in Clark Auditorium. The event was presented as part or the celebration of Black History Month. During the talk, Dr. Woodson talked about his experience in the military, and the role he now plays as the head of USUHS.

Being a caregiver is my calling

WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — It’s National Caregivers Day, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) recognizes the sacrifices, hard work, and compassion of millions of caregivers, including one mother of a Wounded Warrior.

In observance of National Recreational Therapy Month celebrated during March, recreational therapists hosted an information table in the America Building lobby at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Feb. 16. From left, Recreational Therapists Jenny Zumwalde, Jenn Trantin, Cara Navarro, Jen Beattie, and Stephanie Seeley, along with Philip Rackham, adaptive reconditioning and sports coordinator for the Military Adaptive Sports Program (Navy), staff the table providing WRNMMC beneficiaries and staff information explaining what recreational therapy is and how it promotes the health, emotional wellbeing, skills, and abilities of people with illnesses or disabilities. Research supports the concept that people with active, satisfying lifestyles will be happier and healthier. Rec therapy is also individualized to each person by his or her past, present, and future interests, condition and lifestyle. It can used as therapy for those recovering from a stroke, rehabilitating from injury, working to improve motor skills, receiving cancer treatment, experiencing anxiety, depression or isolation, and recovering from a substance use disorder. Therapy plans use a variety of activities including arts and craft; sports and exercise; yoga and dance; music; gardening; cooking, creative writing, animal interactions and more.
