Walter Reed’s Human Research Protection Program re-accredited
WRNMMC, Bethesda, Md. — Research is a foundation of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and essential to that research are human subjects. They help answer questions about biomedical or behavioral interventions, including new treatments, such as novel vaccines, drugs, dietary choices, dietary supplements, and medical devices, and known interventions that warrant further study and comparison.

Former patient salutes nurses on Navy Nurse Corps’ 115th birthday
WRNMMC, Bethesda, Md. — A nurse’s face. That was one of the first things retired Army Master Sgt. Cedric King said he saw after waking up from a coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in August 2012. On July 25, 2012, during his second tour in Afghanistan, King, then on active duty, was severely injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Although the IED claimed his legs, caused internal injuries, and permanent damage to his right arm, it did not destroy his gung-ho spirit and enthusiasm about taking on any challenges life puts before him, he said. The soldier was at WRNMMC as a patient for nearly three years following his injuries in Afghanistan.

Research, Innovation Month spotlights studies conducted at Walter Reed
WRNMMC, Bethesda, Md. — Food insecurity for military families is a concern. Abscess incision and drainage procedure training for medical students can be a challenge, with trainees often missing opportunities to perform or learn the procedure. These were just two of a number of issues researched and tackled by participants in Walter Reed’s Department of Research Programs’ (DRP) annual poster competition, which kicked of 2023 Research and Innovation Month activities on May 1 at the medical center.
