Ringing of the bell: Teen celebrates successful cancer treatment with a ritual

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, BETHESDA, Md. — Celebrating a milestone in his cancer treatment, Landon McKearn, 15, and his mom, retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Tiffany Anderson, hugged and shed tears after Landon rang the bell in Walter Reed’s Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology Clinic on June 14.

Stories, music highlight Walter Reed’s Juneteenth celebration

WRNMMC, Bethesda Md. — Sharing stories and music highlighted Walter Reed’s celebration of Juneteenth on June 18 at the medical center. Members of the Walter Reed community shared those stories, telling personal accounts of their families and themselves. They explained that while there have been advances in equality since June 19, 1865 (when the enslaved Black people in Texas were told they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued), there’s still a long way to go before diversity, equity, and inclusion can be realized throughout the country.

Raising awareness about PTSD

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, BETHESDA, Md. — Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month is observed during June to help spread the word that currently in the United States, approximately 12 million people (about six of every 100) live with PTSD, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Treatment for PTSD works, and help is available at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and throughout the Military Health System.

Walter Reed Champions Holistic Health Care During Cancer Survivorship Day Open House

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, BETHESDA, Md. — The atmosphere inside the Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) on Cancer Survivorship Day, June 6, 2024, resembled a reunion filled with cancer survivors, caretakers, and health care professionals all reconnecting and championing the goal of living with passion and purpose. MCC is the only Department of Defense Center of Excellence for cancer, and in 2023 published a groundbreaking, collaborative study indicating that cancer patients treated within the Military Health System (MHS) generally received earlier cancer diagnoses than privately insured or Medicaid patients.

Murtha Cancer Center hosts the annual Skin Cancer Summit

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, BETHESDA, Md. — The Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the only Department of Defense (DOD) Cancer Center of Excellence, hosted its annual Skin Cancer Summit virtually, May 30, 2024. While May is annually observed as National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month to highlight the most common cancer in the United States, Walter Reed providers encourage people to protect their skin against the sun's harmful rays daily. This includes using sunscreen and wearing clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun for prolonged periods.
