Graduate Medical Education

On August 29, 2011, the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the former National Naval Medical Center, two renowned institutions with a combined legacy of over 150 years of service to our nation's heroes and their families, officially combined to form the "new" Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD.

WRNMMC continues to be a leader in healthcare, providing some of the most advanced and state of the art medical care available anywhere in the world; however in addition to being the largest and pre-eminent medical center in the DOD, WRNMMC is also home to the military's most comprehensive center for graduate medical education (GME), with 75 medical and allied health programs training nearly 700 healthcare providers in all three military services, and staffed by over 1500 faculty.

At Walter Reed Bethesda, we believe the tradition of any great medical institution is evident in both its service and by the teaching and research it provides. As the DOD's leading center for clinical research and innovation, we are able to provide a faculty that rivals some of the greatest centers for academic medicine in the country. Our faculty includes nationally recognized researchers, editors in major specialty journals, and leaders in specialty practices and specialty societies. All of our programs are fully accredited, with both program accreditation cycles and individual trainee board passage rates well above the national average.

WRNNMC is part of the National Capital Consortium (NCC), which is the institutional sponsor for GME in the National Capital Area. In addition to training opportunities at the other NCC organizations, namely the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, there are many collaborative training opportunities at other great institutions nearby to include the National Institutes of Health, WRAIR, the Joint Pathology Center (formerly AFIP), NMRI, Johns Hopkins, Washington Hospital Center, and the Children's National Medical Center.

WRNMMC GME programs achieve prestigious national recognition. They are approved by many American specialty boards and by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

WRNMMC is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC).
