WRNMMC’s prosthetics unit gives relief to military kid with special needs
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — Paisley Minor is just 5 years old, but yet she is strong and talented. Her friendly smile brightens the room as she enters the prosthetics and orthopedics unit despite her struggle to walk. Paisley is a double amputee who has had a total of seven surgeries. She is also battling several other medical conditions. She can only walk with the help of artificial limbs, but that does not stop her from being herself - happy, singing, smiling and sometimes running.

But according to Chief Nursing Officer Navy Capt. Jessica Beard, the nurses at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) deserve recognition year-round because of the unique roles they fill serving at the Flagship of Military Medicine.

Veteran applauds WRNMMC prosthetics unit for excellent services
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — For more than a decade, Earl Granville has been making the four-hour drive from his home near Philadelphia to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During his treatment visits, he undergoes rigorous sessions of physical therapy and has regular maintenance performed on his prosthetic limbs by the staff of WRNMMC’s Department of Rehabilitation. When necessary, the devices are completely replaced. He said he has regained a great deal of strength and confidence due to the service he receives, which is especially important to him as a veteran involved in the work of helping and supporting other veterans.

NICoE Hosts Virtual Program Focused on Nutrition Therapy after Brain Injury

Forty-one Soldiers Graduate from Practical Nurse Course
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — Forty-one Soldiers graduated from the Practical Nurse Course (PNC) during a ceremony March 21 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The U.S. Army Practical Nurse Course condenses instruction usually lasting two years at traditional colleges into a curriculum spanning 52 weeks of intense study, according to Army Staff Sgt. Alexander Balser, who served as an advisor for the graduating class, 21-004.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Tormala Inducted into the ‘Order of Military Medical Merit’
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — Army Sgt. 1st Class Nathan D. Tormala has been awarded the Order of Military Medical Merit and inducted into the 02M3 society. He was recognized for his dedication, commitment and professionalism within the US Army for over 22 years, including two abroad deployments.
Dietitians available to assist with diets for those with prediabetes, diabetes
WRNMMC, Bethesda, MD — Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease, stroke, neuropathy, kidney disease, eye disease, foot problems, gum and dental problems and sexual and bladder issues. There are three laboratory tests used to determine if an individual has prediabetes and four tests used for diabetes: Hemoglobin A1C (percent); Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG); Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT); and Random Plasma Glucose Test. Hemoglobin A1C is a test that determines an individual’s weighted three month blood sugar average (does not need to be a fasting test).
