Dietitians available to assist with diets for those with prediabetes, diabetes

Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease, stroke, neuropathy, kidney disease, eye disease, foot problems, gum and dental problems and sexual and bladder issues. There are three laboratory tests used to determine if an individual has prediabetes and four tests used for diabetes: Hemoglobin A1C (percent); Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG); Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT); and Random Plasma Glucose Test. Hemoglobin A1C is a test that determines an individual’s weighted three month blood sugar average (does not need to be a fasting test).

The Low FODMAP Diet…What Is It?

FODMAP is an acronym that stands for “Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols.” When consumed in excessive amounts (and sometimes, even in small or moderate amounts), these nutrients have a tendency to cause and/or aggravate gastrointestinal symptoms because they are easily fermented in the gut and also draw more fluid into the intestine.

WRNMMC Unsung Heroes- working for patient care not for paychecks

Felix Mulder is an engineering technician. He has extensive background as a plumber and welder. He started working for WRNMMC in 1989. At that time the facility was the National Navy Medical Center (NMMC). Mulder worked in and out day to day of the facility shops. Thirty-three years on, he is still on board, and active within the maintenance department.

The Tiny, Powerful Thyroid – Why It Matters

Located in the neck, the thyroid is “a tiny but important gland,” Vietor continued. While producing hormones that act on almost every part of the body, the thyroid is also responsible for regulating metabolism, as well as the health of the bones, heart, brain and muscles, she explained. Because of its importance in the body, January is annually observed as Thyroid Awareness Month.
