Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Training Program

The National Capital Consortium (NCC) offers an ACGME-accredited tri-service Hematology/Oncology fellowship program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to active-duty Medical Corps officers who have completed residency in Internal Medicine. The NCC Heme/Onc fellowship program is co-located at the Murtha Cancer Center, the only Cancer Center of Excellence within the DOD, embodying next-generation excellence in patient care, education, research, and readiness. The program teaches fellows a state-of-the-art, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary approach to a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic disorders across a diverse range of patient demographics. Fellows receive training in benign and malignant hematology, bone marrow transplant, CAR T-cell therapy, solid tumors, palliative care, community oncology, blood bank, and conduction of clinical trials. Training includes external rotations at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, complementing on-site rotations at Walter Reed by amplifying diversity of experience and exposure to civilian practice, rare diseases and investigator-initiated clinical trials. Additionally, fellows can participate in cutting-edge Heme/Onc research on-site or at nearby hospitals, such as the NIH,
under the mentorship of global leaders in oncology. The NCC Heme/Onc fellows are immersed in broad and robust educational activities including daily didactic sessions. All fellows are funded to attend educational courses, to include the ASH Consultative Hematology Course, the annual ASH and ASCO meetings, and a premier board review course. Fellows also receive military specific training in leadership, massive transfusion protocols, and radiation injury, setting up graduates for success as military Hematologists/Oncologists and leaders. Fellows also receive one-on-one teaching by talented, compassionate core faculty members and professionals. Graduates of the NCC Heme/Onc fellowship program are world-class, competent, and confident Hematologists/Oncologists with successful and flourishing careers, and include military command and congressional leaders, trailblazers at major academic centers, cancer center directors at major medical centers, and leaders within NIH and FDA. The board pass rate among graduates remains 100%.
