NCC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency
Program Description
The National Capital Consortium (NCC) Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residency offers a 48 month program leading to a certificate in OMS. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association (ADA). The program is authorized to enroll five residents per year, typically two Army, two Navy and one Air force candidate.
Upon the completion of training, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon may apply to take the exam for certification offered by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ABOMS).
Goals and Objectives of Training
The primary goal of the OMS residency is to provide the resident with a firm didactic and clinical knowledge of medicine, surgery, and biomedical science. This academic background will prepare the surgeon to safely and proficiently practice the specialty of OMS.
A strong didactic program is coordinated with a robust, multidisciplinary clinical experience to produce a well-educated and technically proficient surgeon. One half-day per week is dedicated to didactics and academics. The OMS attendings, as well as staff from various specialties participate in these academic conferences. Participation in conferences covering basic science, treatment planning, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, anesthesia, cleft/craniofacial, temporomandibular joints, head and neck tumor, and complications are used to teach and evaluate the residents. Cadaver labs, guest lectures and off-site conferences are also utilized to bolster the academics of the program.
The on-service experience is provided between two hospitals: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. Off-service rotations provide experience in anesthesia, internal medicine, general surgery, surgical intensive care, otolaryngology, oculoplastics, plastic surgery, dermatology and maxillofacial pathology. A three month rotation focusing on maxillofacial trauma is provided at the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), Charleston, WV, along with two months at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. The OMS program is structured to provide progressive surgical and patient management responsibility.
The resident, with a staff mentor, is required to initiate, submit and complete some form of scholarly activity during their residency. This may include, but is not limited to, a research project, submission of a paper to a peer reviewed journal, presentation of research at a regional, national, or international meeting, or authoring a book chapter.
The program currently has at least five full time faculty members. All OMS staff are Diplomats of the ABOMS or pursuing board certification. The OMS staff is also augmented by members of all dental specialties, which are on site at WRNMMC. This includes prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral-facial pain, maxillofacial pathologists, maxillofacial radiologists and multiple general dental providers. A General Practice Residency program is also maintained at WRNMMC.
