Major Goals of Training Program
This is a two-year training program in the field of Histocompatibility testing and Transplant Immunology. The ultimate goal is to provide the fellow with the knowledge and skills to assume an HLA director position and to prepare the individual for certification examination by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. The main training site at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) which provides solid organ transplantation services for the entire Department of Defense. It is one of the earliest transplant programs in the nation, boasts success in short and long term outcomes, and is consistently among the top transplant centers in the country. The first year of training will have much emphasis on the technical aspects of Histocompatibility testing with on-the-bench training in DNA typing, antibody detection and identification, and cross-matching. The second year of training will concentrate more on the director’s responsibilities and management skills stressing review of case reports, proficiency testing results, quality assurance, and completion of a portfolio. Trainees must be US citizens; commissioned officers in the Army, Navy or Air Force Medical Corps; and must have a current, valid unrestricted medical license.
